What is my specialization, training, and work experience?

Hi! My name is Olga Shchedrinskaya.

I am a clinical counsellor, specializing in couples and family therapy. I have a Masters Degree in Counselling Psychology and two professional designations: Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC reg. # 17658) and Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC reg. # 10004461), enabling me to support clients across Canada. I am a registered ICBC vendor - I can accept direct payments by ICBC.

I have worked as a counsellor in a non-profit organization, private practice, and a mental health clinic since 2009. I work with youth, adults, couples, and families addressing a variety of issues such as stress and anxiety, depression, grief and loss, death and dying, parenting concerns and attachment issues, career and identity, life transitions, loneliness and isolation, communication, family conflict, and relationship issues.

I support children and youth struggling with ADHD, mood swings, fears, anger management, and low self-esteem. I also help couples with premarital difficulties, infidelity, conflict resolution, separation, multicultural issues, and immigration challenges.

My work is grounded in Family Systems and Attachment theory.  I use a number of evidence-based approaches including Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, Gottman couple therapy, and Satir Transformational Systemic Therapy. I am a trauma-informed therapist, and I also incorporate several mindfulness-based and expressive art psychotherapies in my work.

I have extensive experience working remotely with international clients from the US, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Israel, Russia, Turkey, Latvia, and many other countries. My practice is LGBTQIA affirming, and I  welcome clients of all races and racial identities, countries of origin, gender identities, sexual orientations, religions, abilities, and body sizes.

My philosophy for therapy 

I am passionate about change and strongly believe all individuals have potential for personal growth. I believe counselling plays an important role providing hope, guidance, reflection, and a new perspective for people as they navigate life's inevitable ups and downs. In my philosophy, counselling gives opportunities for everyone to change their relationships with significant others, change their inner self, and generally live a more fulfilling life. 

My practice and approach are built upon the foundational belief that anyone can change. As a relational therapist, I am deeply committed to supporting individuals, families, and couples as they navigate life transitions and different experiences that impact connection with oneself and/or with one another. I am passionate about my clients, and I work hard with them toward meeting their goals. During our work, we become partners in this journey towards a positive change. We will have a chance to discover strengths and resources, explore repetitive patterns, needs, core values and beliefs, underlying emotional issues, and relationship dynamics to find a satisfying and meaningful way of coping with life stressors and challenges. I strongly believe in the power of resilience and finding growth in the midst of challenges. 

Counselling is an invitation to come and be; to take an honest look at yourself for who and what you really are; to realize your issues make sense; and to have compassion for all parts of you so you can function at your full potential.

The clients I mostly work with want to:

My style is warm, attentive, and engaging. I strongly believe that everyone deserves care and respect, a sense of belonging, and empowerment.  The relationship and trust between therapist and client is a foundational aspect of any therapy. I work hard to create a safe place for you. At the same time, my attention is focused beyond our conversations during the counselling session, towards the important aspects of your life that you would like to change.
